Find out what a Scenario is, and how many you can create at one time.*
In this article we look at how what a Scenario is, when one is active or inactive, and how many can be added to an Experience or Space at one time.
What is a Scenario?
A Scenario is an Experience that has been configured for a specific audience Tribe and/or scheduled for a particular date/time. Scenarios can be set up for a single occurrence i.e., between October and November, or can occur on recurring schedule i.e., every weeknight from 6-8pm. Activity or custom events can be tracked so you can adjust according to performance.
A default Scenario exists for each Experience instance. This is the default state of the Experience that will be served to your entire audience unless you add another Scenario variant with a different target audience.
When is a Scenario considered active or inactive?
A Scenario is considered ‘active’ when the Collection containing the Experience is published, and the Scenario is switched on with the toggle on the right-hand side of the page. This means it is live and may be visible to the Tribes you’ve selected.
A Scenario is considered ‘inactive’ when the Collection containing the Experience is unpublished, and/or the Scenario is switched off with the toggle on the right-hand side of the page. This means it is no longer live and is not visible to the Tribes you’ve selected.
What are the entity limits for Scenarios?
A total of 40 (incl. active & inactive) Scenarios can be added to any Experience at one time. This limit allows for many Scenarios to be created per Experience, while ensuring optimal page performance.
If you need to add more Scenarios to an Experience but have reached the 40 limit, you will need to delete one before proceeding.
A total of 2000 (active) Scenarios can be added to any Space at one time.
This limit allows for many Scenarios to be created per Space, while meeting high performance standards when a Software Development Kit (SDK) loads in the correct Scenario for all Experiences in the Space.
If you need to add more Scenarios to a Space but have reached the 2000 limit, you can go ahead and create them, but they will remain inactive by default. You will need to either disable or delete an already active Scenario before the new one can be turned on.
How do I know if I've reached the limit?
If the active limit is breached, you will be notified by means of a modal or a warning message telling you what to do (see image below).
These are some of the cases where breaching this limit could occur:
- Creating a new Scenario variant from a specific Experience in a Collection
- Attempting to toggle on an inactive Scenario
- Attempting to turn on an Experience that is turned off
- Updating a Collection template by adding a new Experience to it
If you’ve reached the active limit, consider how you can use a recurring schedule instead of creating a new Scenario.
